Drabble: "The Gift of Silence," for tolkien_weekly's "Solitude" challenge

Title: The Gift of Silence
Author: Kris
Word count: 100
Characters/Pairing: Aragorn, Faramir
Rating: G
Disclaimer: don't own 'em, not for profit
Work: LOTR
Notes: For the "Solitude" challenge on tolkien_weekly ... I've never seen solitude as being alone, particularly, and it seemed to fit well with these two, solitary but never alone for most of their lives.

There were days when Aragorn sorely missed his Ranger persona, when even Arwen's calming presence was too much. When what he needed-craved--most was silence and stillness and the sounds of a forest around him.

At those moments, the best he could do was a small, quiet arch tucked deep into the crenellations halfway around the Fifth Circle. And sooner or later, a warm body would slide its familiar lines next to him, reddish-gold hair would slide over his shoulder, and they would share the gift of silence and stillness--and the forest was always there in their memory.

Oh thank you! I'm always worried that subtle is *too* subtle, but I'm so glad you liked it!

How lovely!

A bit sad and very quiet. Very fitting for the challenge!

...It occurs to me that I need a Faramir icon.

Thank you... glad you liked it! But out of curiousity, why did you find it sad?

And yes, Faramir icons are lovely things. Have you checked out [info]rohandove's, or [info]fileg's? They both have some lovely Faramir ones.

Sad... because nothing gold can stay, I guess. That might not be the best word for it, maybe. Perhaps I'm just a bit meloncholy by nature. :)

And as for icons, I've seen lots of beautiful icons by those two! I'll have to ask and pick my favorite.

I'll just agree with everyone else and say it was lovely and definitely not too subtle. It must have been quite a change for Aragorn - a city instead of the open air and land.

Thank you--glad you liked it and didn't find it too subtle! And yes, I suspect it was a change for both Aragorn and Faramir, closed up in a city after all that time in the wild.

Subtlety is good and this is beautiful.

Oh, yes -- exactly what I was trying to say in my anti-Minas Tirith rant!

*grin* Glad you liked it... but you know, we're watching the commentary right now, and I think, since I'm a city girl, it doesn't bother me so much. I'm used to not so much green space, so writing this was sort of a surprise for me!

Boy, that was a tangent. *grin* Anyway, I'm glad you liked it and it worked so well!

Wonderful, this is so how I see both of them. Doing their duty, but missing the freedom of the forests at the same time. *loves*

It just seems to me that after all that time in the wild, being cooped up in a city of stone would tell on them after a while... and who else is there who would understand but each other?

So glad you liked it!

*smooch*

Oh very nice! So quiet and subtle.

I can see why they'd both miss the forest and it's sort of nice to think they have ecah other to understand that.

Thank you--glad you liked it, and glad it's not *too* subtle.

Yes, it does seem to me that they'd both understand each other in this, and probably be the only ones who did! It's funny, how bonds like that form sometimes.

Ah, the two rangers. Faramir is so much more like Aragorn than Boromir ever was - they share the same quiet wisdom and introspection - and the love of the peace of the forrest.

When I read the books, lo those many years ago, *grin*, I didn't even pay attention to Boromir--it was always Faramir and Aragorn for me. So I suppose that influences me now quite a bit.

Glad you liked it!

In the books it was always Aragorn for me - I'm a sucker for a dashing hero. Before the books of course there was the Bakshi animation, which was my favourite film as a child, and in which I fell in love with a slightly camp but utterly ethereal elf and a gruff hero with the voice of John Hurt.

You may have noticed now though that I write about the brother's Mir a lot more often than I write anyone else - well, ok, Aragorn often features in my Boromir drabbles, but that doesn't count. Oddly, my love for the brothers came out of reading fics and discussing the characters - fandom made me love them more than the book ever did.

A few years ago you wouldn't have hear me arguing that Boromir was more heroic than Aragorn, but now I argue such with gusto.

I still revert to my Elf- and Dunadan-loving ways when I want to write a bit of slash, though - I have yet to write Boromir slash. It's Aragorn/Legolas all the way for me.

This is quite lovely. I adore the idea of the two rangers finding quiet within the city.

I'vealways loved the idea of Aragorn and Faramir understanding each other, well before I read genfic or slash about them. This is a beautiful depiction of the sort of thing I was thinking of.

Thank you!

I remember even when I read the book when I was younger, I thought there was a definite connection between the two of them, so this is somewhat a tribute to that.

Glad you liked it!
